Your Laurens YMCA is faced with the tremendous task of maintaining an indoor heated swimming pool. The mechanical equipment needed to maintain the 155,000 gallons of water and 9,000 square foot center is in desperate need of repair. Operating costs average $10,553.00 per month resulting in an annual expense of over $120,000. The Aquatics Center generates an average of $22,449 annually from swim team, pool rentals and swim lessons. Coupled with a decline in contributions as a result of our economy and the increase in scholarships granted, this $85,000 loss is unsustainable.
Built in 1996, the heated indoor swimming pool at the Laurens YMCA is one of the nicest in the upstate. The benefits of aquatic exercise are well-known: improved endurance, improved lung capacity, resistance from water rather than hard surfaces and more. Physicians often recommend water exercise to patients recovering from injuries.
Our community is very fortunate to have a heated indoor swimming pool at the Laurens YMCA. "We have a beautiful facility. The YMCA members and the community of Laurens should be proud to have this Aquatics Center and the facility that our 35+ acre complex offers. We need to commend those who provided the funds the construct this facility," stated Brian Harlan, CEO.
As well as being open for all members, the pool is available to non-members for parties, swim lessons and community swim times in the summer (in conjunction with the City of Laurens). Aquatics Center programs include water aerobic classes, older adult water fitness classes, swim lessons, lap swim and the Laurens County YMCAs' swim team. Having an indoor pool available year round for swim lessons is vital in helping to reduce the number of drowning in our area. Water activities are family-friendly and can continue for a lifetime.
Founded in 1969, the Family YMCA of Greater Laurens is instrumental in providing programs for children, youth, teens, adults and seniors in the Laurens community. The YMCA motto "building healthy spirit, mind and body for all" means meeting the health and wellness needs of our community. At the YMCA no one is ever turned away due to lack of ability to pay for membership or program fees. Financial assistance is available to all who apply and qualify. The YMCA provides programs in Sports, Wellness, Childcare and Aquatics for all regardless of age, race, background or economic standing.
